Papers and photographs, 1865-1919.

Discharge papers and photographs of the Phillips family (Charles, Earl, and Cornelius Loomis) from Cadiz and Beloit, Wisconsin. Charles Phillips, a Cadiz, Wisconsin resident, served with Company H, 1st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Spanish-American War. His son, Earl, served with Troop B, 6th Cavalry during World War I and was from Beloit, Wisconsin. Cornelius Loomis, father-in-law to Charles and a resident of Cadiz, served with the 5th Wisconsin Light Artillery during the Civil War. The manuscripts consist of the discharge papers and additional biographical material for all three men. There are also four photographs pertaining to the service of Charles and Earl in the collection. The image of Charles is a tintype that shows him posing in uniform, holding a rifle, and standing next to a sign for Camp Harvey, Wisconsin. The three photographs pertaining to Earl consist of a group of soldiers posing around a keg of beer and drinking, Earl posing in uniform, and another cavalry soldier posing in uniform in front of a tent. The photograph of the soldier posing in front of a tent has "Bro James, 1917" written on the back. His connection to the Phillips family is unclear. Documents indicate that he was a brother to Earl and had also served in the 6th Cavalry. However, census data never lists a James as living with the Phillips family. Also, there is no listing for a James Phillips serving in World War I from Wisconsin. The group shot of the soldiers drinking beer is presumably of members of the 6th Cavalry. The keg has CA 6 written on it.
